Extra Support for Current and Former Foster Youth
NextUp is here to help you stay on track and succeed in college.
If you’re a current or former foster youth, you may be eligible for NextUp, a support
program that offers extra resources to help you reach your educational goals. From
textbook assistance to tutoring, transportation, and even emergency housing NextUp
is designed to ease the journey.
💡 What Is NextUp?
NextUp is a program that supports California community college students who were in
foster care. It provides comprehensive services to help you stay enrolled, complete
your courses, and thrive both in and out of the classroom.
🛠️ What Support Can I Get?
Eligible students receive ALL EOPS services and may also receive:
- Textbook and school supply assistance
- Transportation support
- Food and meal support
- Emergency housing help
- Tutoring services
- Academic and personal counseling
- Career and transfer planning
- Priority registration
- Financial aid and scholarships (including Chafee and Cal Grant B Foster Youth awards)
✅ Who Qualifies?
You may be eligible if you:
- Were in foster care (in any state) for at least one day on or after your 13th birthday
- Are enrolled in or plan to enroll in at least 9 units, or have an education plan to
reach that goal
- Enroll before turning 26 (and you can stay in the program even after turning 26)
Already turned 26 and were in the program before? You may still be able to return!
💰 What ˿Ƶ Financial Aid?
NextUp students can also qualify for additional financial support:
- Chafee Grant: Up to $5,000/year for former foster youth ages 16–18
- Cal Grant B Foster Youth Award: Up to 8 years of support
- Promise Grant Fee Waiver: No age cutoff for foster youth under 25 by July 1 of the
award year
